During extreme wind, SDG&E may shut off power in high-fire-risk areas. Even when your internet provider's network is fine, your modem, fiber box and router stop without power.
Plan by how long you need to stay online
- Short blips: a small battery backup (UPS) for the modem and router.
- Hours: a portable power station runs network gear and charges phones.
- Wired service down too: a 5G hotspot or 5G mobile router, if cell towers stay up.
- Alerts: sign up for SDG&E outage notifications for your address.

For businesses
Forward phones to cell phones, know whether payments can run on a backup connection, and keep a printed contact list. A dual-WAN router switches to backup on its own.
