What happened
Charter Communications, the company behind Spectrum, completed its acquisition of Cox Communications on August 20, 2026. Charter said former Cox markets, including San Diego, would move to Spectrum branding, pricing and packages starting in mid-September 2026. Charter also said Cox internet customers without Cox Mobile would be offered a free mobile line for a year.
What it means if you had Cox
- Your service keeps working. The network in the ground is the same.
- Watch your mail and email for notices about your account, billing, apps and equipment.
- Pricing and plans may change as Spectrum packages replace Cox's. Compare your new bill with the old one.
- Use only official channels. Scammers love brand changes. Log in through the provider's own app or website, not links in unexpected texts.
Is this a good time to shop around?
Often, yes. If your price changes or your contract ends, compare AT&T Fiber and local fiber like Wyyerd (South Bay and East County) or Ting (Carlsbad) where available. Businesses can get a side-by-side comparison in our needs wizard.
Based on Charter's announcements as reported in August 2026. Check your own account notices for details that apply to you.
More questions
Do I need new equipment after Cox became Spectrum?
Not automatically. Follow the notices from your provider. Don't trust unexpected calls or texts asking you to buy equipment or pay by gift card.
Can I still get Cox service?
The former Cox network now operates as Spectrum in San Diego.
